According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, the 64-year-old could join the Milan club if takeover talks are quickly resolved.
Van Gaal was sacked by United last month, and will replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic, who was himself sacked in April before Christian Brocchi took over on a temporary basis.
Van Gaal has managed in Holland, Spain, Germany and England during his career, but has never taken charge of an Italian team.
The Dutchman previously hinted he would retire from management after his stint at United ended but he could be tempted into management with an Italian team.
Andre Villas-Boas and Ronald de Boer are also being considered for the vacant San Siro hot seat.
Van Gaal delivered United’s first major trophy of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era when he guided the club to FA Cup success at Wembley in May.
However,he was sacked after securing a fifth-placed Premier League finish with former assistant Jose Mourinho announced as his replacement.
