Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, yesterday indicated that government would soon hand over all missionary schools in the state to their original owners.
Ortom The governor said this became necessary in view of inability of government to properly manage such schools.
Ortom spoke at a special prayer session for the people and government of the state and launch of the pilot scheme of the Win A Trip To Isreal, WATTI, organized by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission in Makurdi.
While noting that modalities for a hitch free transfer had been put in place to ensure smooth handover of the schools, Ortom said, “We have discussed and reached a conclusion on the matter.
There is no going back on that decision because we are compelled and convinced that it would serve the sector better if such schools were returned to their original owners.
”Our decision was propelled by our conviction that when you do a comparison of the schools being managed by government and those under the care of the missionaries you will discover the glaring differences.
”In the coming days we will set up a committee to ensure that the new policy is implemented so that we can have a breath of fresh air in schools management for greater productivity.”
The Governor also commended the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission for the innovations, he introduced in the commission to ensure that most people made the pilgrimage to Israel without government sponsorship.
